Famed for its unbelievably small kitchen, impressively huge collection of beers, & its rich and varied history, our medieval ale house will always be associated with its quirky taxidermy animal collection, and the staff who truly embody the spirit of "Madness"! |

The rear end of this fantastic building began life as part of a Norman House dating back to c.1180AD, believed to be the oldest of its kind in York. The building as it can be seen from the street has survived much adversity, through wealth & poverty, decimating fires, and even the widening of the narrower streets that took place many centuries later. Other parts of the city were not so fortunate to have survived, beams & cobbles intact.
We are very proud of our hidden tavern's history, and seek to preserve the experience that folks may have had in days gone by, paired with the very best of modern craft beer, locally sourced produce, and served with hearty cheer in a comfortable environment, designed for budging up and sharing a pew!
Our food is all sourced from the best that Yorkshire has to offer, and intended for sharing. We believe in good quality grub, with Yorkshire spirit (that means large portions!)
Food is served all day long, as we believe that good beer should always be paired with good food. We are after all European , and strongly believe that if food is always available alongside quality drinks, then perhaps binge drinking may decline, allowing for the rise of a more responsible, socially-oriented approach to food & drink.
Also, look out for our Specials Board, for our Daily Soups & Stews.
For craft beer in the pub we have 8 kegs, 4 casks, plus a carefully curated, yet extensive collection of beers available from the shop that you can also drink in.
Unfortunately due to the intimate size of our pub, we are unable to take table bookings. We encourage you to pop in, and share a table, make some friends, and enjoy life #themadnessway
Don't forget, just because you can't see it, it doesn't mean it isn't there! The bar is hidden, and so is our extensive spirits cellar. Not to mention our incredible selection of miniatures & gift packs too.
Our ground floor shop stocks classic German & Belgian beers, the best & freshest craft beers from all over the world, a multitude of mead, wine, fruit wine, artisan gin, whisky, absinthe, rum, tequila, cachaça, liqueurs, brandy, and if you still can't find what you're looking for?
Feel free to ask our staff, you never know!
